Preparing Your Home For A Painting Project: Three Things To Consider

Posted on: 5 January 2017

When hiring a general painting contractor to paint your home, there are a few things you'll want to do to prepare for the project. With a bit of preparation, you can ensure that your project will go smoothly, and your home will have a fresh new look when the painting is done. Here are just a few things to consider as you prepare for your painting project.

Test Your Chosen Colors

Paint colors can have a different appearance depending on the lighting in your room. Before you purchase your paint and give your contractor the go-ahead to get started, be sure to test your chosen paint colors. You can typically get a small sample of paint from your hardware store. Paint a sheet of white cardboard or construction paper with your selected colors and tape the sheet to a wall in your room. Observe the color under your room's lighting scheme to determine if it is the right color for you. You may end up testing a few different shades of the same color to see which one you like the best.

Prep The Room

The amount of preparation you'll need to do to the room being painted will depend on which additional services your painting contractor offers. Some contractors will move your furniture for you, while others will expect you to do this on your own. You may need to have drop cloths and other supplies ready when your contractor arrives, while others will bring some of their own materials to the job. If you have holes in your walls from nails, you may want to have them filled in before your painters arrive. Have your contractor list out any additional services offered on your estimate so you know exactly how much prep work you'll need to complete before starting your project.

Make Arrangements For Children And Pets

You won't want to have your children or pets disturbing the painters while they're working, and it's also a good idea to not have them around the fumes from the paint, paint thinners, and primer. Make arrangements to board your pets during the time your contractor will be there, and try to arrange for the project to be completed during the hours your children are in school. If your little ones are not yet in school, consider arranging a play date to keep them out of the house.

Discuss your project with your contractor in advance, and ask for any other items you need to have completed before your project begins. Your painting contractor may have some additional helpful hints you can use to ensure your painting project is a success. Contact a company like Velarde Builders Inc. for more information.
